The Time I Told My Dad a Dirty Joke When I Was in Third Grade
In my third grade classroom (it was 1963 or ‘64) I sat across from a boy who told me this joke:
The Boy: Did you hear that President Johnson broke his leg?
Me: No!
The Boy: He fell out of Lady Bird’s nest.
“Hahaha!
What a good joke!” I thought, picturing Lady Bird Johnson sitting in a
giant bird nest, Lyndon Johnson attempting to climb into it and falling
out!
That evening, or
perhaps a few evenings later we were at my grandparents’ farm. At the
supper table I blurted out the Lady Bird joke.
Nobody laughed.
My
dad sitting next to me, who sometimes did not spare my feelings, did on this occasion. He leaned over to me and quietly said “That’s not a
very nice joke so you probably shouldn't tell it to anyone else.”
“Why?” I asked.
“It’s not nice to tell jokes about the president” replied my quick-thinking dad.
“Oh.”

For
years I thought it was wrong to tell jokes about the president. I
would hear Jack Paar and Johnny Carson tell jokes about the president
but figured they were allowed since they were famous, too, like the
president.
It was many
years later, as I was listening to a podcast about Lady Bird Johnson
that I got to thinking about that joke again and what it really meant.
And I wish my dad was still around so we could share a laugh about the
time I told him a dirty joke when I was in third grade.
